Job title:

Quality of Life Volunteer

Commitment:

4 hours a week, with a minimum 100 hours commitment

Purpose and main function:

Providing community support to cancer patients and their families according to the vision, mission and goals of QoL team

Criteria:

  • Adaptability and ability to work as part of a team
  • Good communication skills
  •  Willingness to learn and follow instructions
  •  Ability to work unsupervised

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Volunteers are expected to report to the head of the voluntary team
  • A HMC identification badge must be worn at all time on hospital premises

Volunteers are expected to abide to HMC’s rules and regulations including:

  • HMC infection control practices
  • HMC Policy CL7232 “Cleaning and disinfection of Reused Toys and Play Equipment”
  • HMC policy OP4306 “Code of Conduct”
  • HMC policy CL7246 “Infection Control Practices”
  • HMC policy 1015 “Safety Management Plan” 

Volunteers are also asked to have the following: 

  • Be in good health and ensure the safety of themselves and others
  • Preserve the confidentiality of the patient and their families, QoL staff and the hospital
  • Ensure the safety of patients and families involved in any voluntary activity
  • Report any immediate requirement for care, incidents or concerns regarding a patient or their families to the QoL team
  • Report each activity performed for the patient and their families
  • Some administrative duties may apply, as the need arises. 

Qualities Needed: 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A supportive approach is necessary while working closely with patients, families, QoL team and staff at the hospital
  • The ability to speak another language is desirable
